The Institute of Psychosexual Psychotherapy offers a rigorous and rewarding Psychotherapy Practitioner Diploma designed for experienced professionals.

This diploma can serve as part of a comprehensive qualifying pathway as a Psychosexual Psychotherapist or as a standalone advanced course to enhance clinical and research skills.

What the Diploma Offers

Part-time, one-year programme blending advanced clinical practice with an in-depth research project. Delivered online via six study days (one per month, 9am–5pm) plus monthly academic supervision sessions. Next start date: October 2025.

Professional Recognition and Accreditation

Designed to align with COSRT Thematic Level 7 Training Course standards (going through the accreditation process pending approval).

Accepted as part of an application for UKCP membership as a Psychosexual Psychotherapist (subject to holding an eligible primary professional qualification and COSRT accreditation).

Curriculum Highlights

  • Developing and writing a research proposal (design methodology and ethical considerations).
  • Critically evaluating psychotherapy research and completing a comprehensive literature review in psychotherapy and clinical sexology.
  • Extensive reading, critical evaluation, and synthesis of existing research.
  • Collecting qualitative and/or quantitative data using (and/or developing) appropriate research tools and methods.
  • Advanced data analysis skills to interpret findings and present new information to the field.
  • Academic critical writing for a 10,000-word dissertation.
  • Reflexivity through critical self-assessment of the research process and findings.

Students benefit from dedicated group and individual research supervision throughout their project.

Advanced Clinical Practice

  • Advancing anti-oppressive psychosexual and relationship therapy practice.
  • Working with complex presentations in psychosexual and relationship therapy.
  • Advanced approaches to gender, sexuality, and relationship diversities.
  • Understanding and treating ‘specialisms within the specialism’ (e.g., compulsive sexual behaviour, shame, attachment issues).
  • Working effectively with psychological trauma in psychosexual and relationship therapy.
  • Advanced conflict resolution strategies for intimate partner therapy.
  • Group clinical case consultation.

Assessment Methods

  • Research proposal
  • Ethical research approval application
  • Case study research dissertation (10,000 words)
  • Complex case analysis and write up

Completion Criteria

  1. 90% attendance on teaching modules.
  2. Successful completion of all formal assessment components.
  3. Evidence of 300 hours of psychosexual and relationship psychotherapy clinical practice (in addition to 150 qualifying hours), supervised at 1:6 ratio to qualify for COSRT accreditation.
  4. 30 hours of personal therapy (in addition to 50 qualifying hours already undertaken) to evidence 80 hours overall.
  5. By the end of the diploma: three years post-qualifying experience as a COSRT registered therapist or already be COSRT accredited.

Eligibility

Applicants must be qualified Psychosexual and Relationship Therapists.

Fees

£1,750 payable via deposit of £130 and twelve monthly instalments of £135.
